Campaigners are calling on Asda and Tesco to sell more Fairtrade bananas.

Fairtrade Foundation is encouraging consumers to send messages to the two retailers this month, which it said was when buyers typically negotiate supplier contracts for the year ahead.

It claimed Asda and Tesco were the two largest UK sellers of the fruit that still stocked some non-Fairtrade bananas, and that a poll of 2,000 adults showed more than eight in 10 consumers - including 85% of Asda shoppers and 84% of Tesco shoppers - would pay more for bananas if producers benefited.

“UK consumers care about the conditions faced by the people who grow our food,” said the Foundation.
