Food safety bosses are targeting poultry producers in a bid to better control campylobacter on farms.
The Food Standards Agency has produced a leaflet outline best practice advice on hygiene measures on farm.
The leaflet, entitled ‘Cleaner Farms, Better Flocks’, will lay the foundations for further advice to tackle campylobacter, one of the most common causes of food poisoning in the UK.
FSA said that although studies have shown hygiene standards on UK farms are generally good, some of the basic measures are not followed.
Dr Judith Hilton, head of microbiological safety, said: “Good basic hygiene is an essential first step to controlling campylobacter on farms.
“Even though hygiene standards are generally high, lapses do occur and the FSA wants to ensure best practice is followed at all times.”
The leaflet has been developed in conjunction with chicken farmers and other industry bodies.
