Six UK titles and some 90 UK staff will be made redundant as part of a global restructuring by Future Publishing.
Worldwide, 350 jobs will be axed and 20 loss making magazines will close.
The UK magazines to fold are the recently launched Video Gamer, DCUK, WAP, Digital Camera User, Quick and Easy Windows, and Your iMac.
Two occasional titles will be suspended, Best Games Ever and PlayStation Tips.
The Bath based company says the measures "are designed to streamline the company's portfolio, reduce operating costs and debt and enhance profitability". The group has reduced its investment spend in 2001 by £5m, to below £15m. One time restructuring costs are expected to be less than £5m.
The announcement comes after the recent ABC figures, which showed Future's flagship Official PlayStation Magazine had dropped circulation from 300,000 to 215,000 a figure which was offset by the launch of Official PlayStation 2 magazine.
That title recorded an initial three-month ABC of 81,883, with Future increasing its PlayStation market share to 67%.
Future Publishing's managing director Mike Frey says: "Future's overall circulation has clearly been affected by trading conditions, particularly the transition from PlayStation 1 to PlayStation 2. Overall the portfolio is down, but it is pleasing to see many of our core titles increase market share and such a strong start for our PlayStation 2 titles."
The group intends to refocus its UK Internet activities onto a single portal (FutureNet) that will offer a series of content channels covering computing, games, technology and e-business.
