One of the aims of The Grocer Club is to offer independent retailers a chance to win great prizes. And what could be better than winning the chance of a £5,000 store makeover?
That's the prize the Hannam family won simply by entering a competition in our September issue. The £5,000 new look was offered by Switch, the UK's leading debit card.
The Hannams own a butchers and village store in Lytchett Matravers, near Poole in Dorset. The store's proud boast is that "fair prices have been our objective for the past 40 years". It backs up that claim with monthly special offers and seasonal promotions.
The store offers a wide range of grocery products, including fresh produce, meat, milk, eggs and fresh fish on Fridays.
Non food lines include coal, wood and kindling, greetings cards and a selection of plants and shrubs. There's even a dry cleaning service.
LA Hannam & Sons has been trading in Lytchett Matravers since 1955, when Lyle Hannam, now 82, built a shop and house in the village for his family.
The shop became a full food store in 1975 and through much hard work has survived in the face of strong supermarket competition.
Lyle entered the competition saying the makeover would be a great gift for his sons who have been running the store since 1986, although Lyle still helps out in the store when required.
The modernisation work will start in the next few weeks and full details of the Switch sponsored makeover will be carried in next month's issue of The Grocer Club News.
