Scottish Grocers' Federation buying arm the PGMA is launching the 2C Convenience in your Community fascia at a 900 sq ft independent store in Paisley on June 20 (The Grocer, March 1, p5).
PGMA commercial director Jim Amabile said the format would be introduced at two other stores in the next four to six weeks, one in Glasgow, and another in Fife. The target is to convert 36 of the 70 PGMA member stores to the format by the end of 2004. It will be adapted to fit stores from 400 sq ft to 15,000 sq ft, said Amabile.
PGMA is positioning 2C as a "fascia trading group" as opposed to a symbol group to avoid conflict with its supplier, Nisa, he said.
The format is targeted at independent retailers who want to be able to use a fascia to increase their commercial credibility. They will be able to incorporate their existing trading name in the fascia for example the pilot Paisley store will be known as 2C Skye Stores'.
Amabile said PGMA had already been approached about the format by symbol group members.
Non-PGMA retailers, currently supplied by Nisa direct rather than through PGMA, would have to leave Nisa to get access to 2C, said Amabile.
PGMA is a non-profit making buying group which places orders with Nisa centrally, and invoices members for payment two weeks later.
That gives extra time for payment, as Nisa's standard practice is next day invoicing, said Amabile.
The cost to the retailer of operating 2C is £7.50 a week.
