Piccolo has added a swathe of lines in its ‘biggest innovation pipeline yet’

Piccolo has unveiled its “biggest innovation pipeline yet” alongside a “vibrant” redesign as it seeks to improve its nutritional credentials.

For babies aged seven months and up, Piccolo has added World Flavours, a trio of meals (rsp: £1.90) inspired by global cuisines: Mexican Chicken Bowl, Spanish Vegetarian Paella and Korean BBQ Beef.

For babies aged six months and up, Piccolo has also expanded its Supersmoothie range with two variants (rsp: £1.60): Brain Boost, which is a berry and coconut blend with plant-based omega-3 DHA to support brain development and Immunity, a blueberry and kale mix with sea buckthorn and acerola.

It has added Apple, Banana & Kale Blend (rsp: £1.40) and Banana & Lemon Greek-Style Yoghurt (rsp: £1.50) to its Stage 1 range and added multipack formats (rsp: £5/4x100g) for Strawberry & Banana Brekkie and Blueberry & Banana Yoghurt – all of which, in line with NHS guidance – are intended for infants over six months.

For toddlers aged three years and up, Piccolo has added a trio of multigrain snacks: Cocoa & Coconut Crispy Sticks (rsp: £3.50/5x25g), Apple & Mango Multigrain Bars (rsp: £3/6x23g) and Cheese Multigrain Balls (rsp: £2.80/4x15g).

The new products, featuring Piccolo’s “vibrant” new packaging designs, will launch into major retailers this month.

“We believe that parents deserve better – better guidance, better products, and better nutrition,” said Piccolo founder Cat Gazzoli.

“This year’s brand refresh and innovation pipeline is all about making nutritious choices easy, exciting, and empowering for families,” she added.

BBC Panorama investigation

It comes three months after Piccolo was criticised in a BBC Panorama investigation for marketing its Stage 1 pouches to parents of infants aged four months and up, and for the poor nutrition of some of its pouches. Pure Mango, for instance, was found to contain less than 0.1mg of vitamin C.

Piccolo advised that it had it started relabelling all four-month packets to six months in 2024. As vitamins degrade during processing, it said it boosted many of its fruit pouches with ingredients rich in vitamin C.

Category-leading babyfood brand Ella’s Kitchen has also promised to increase the recommended ages on its weaning products from four months and up to six months and up. It will begin to roll out the updated labels in October, with a full transition by March 2026.
