Just because it's a snacking item does not mean a product should be of poor quality. That's the message from Menken Orlando, the Dutch-based nut, dried fruit and rice cracker processor, trading here through Welco Foods as Menken Bar Snacks.
According to Welco, the savoury snack category is no different from any impulse-bought product the customer must perceive value for money and enjoy the snack, whether it is eaten in or out of the home.
However, the market has suffered, says the company, from a surfeit of low-priced, poor-quality items. This decline has been caused partly by brand leaders switching their promotional resources away from nuts to extruded products.
Welco says nuts are arguably closer to real foods than many extruded products. Moreover, the future is likely to see more "better for you" products in the snack sector, which Menken says will increase its market share as health concerns attract more media attention.
The consumer is now demanding quality and is willing to pay for a more enjoyable snack. Welco says it offers them that choice with a variety of products for the home that are both flavoursome and healthy, and which come in a range of pack sizes.
