Afro-Caribbean food importer Wanis has opened a £17m eco-friendly distribution facility in East London after being forced to find new premises by the London Olympics.
The company has moved to the 120,000 sq ft site on the new Golden Business Park in Leyton as part of the official Olympic relocation programme for businesses in the Stratford area of East London, which will host the Olympic Village. The London Development Agency compulsorily purchased Wanis' previous site.
The company, which has a turnover of £28m and is a member of the Today's buying group, said the new depot was one of the most environmentally friendly distribution centres in the country. Hi-tech features include a water-based under-floor heating system, which does not require any external fuel and is powered by channelling heat from the earth. There are also waterless toilets, a rainwater harvesting system and solar heating for tap water.
