At £1.99, Waitrose's sauce (four stars out of five) was the priciest of the bunch and was pale in colour. It tasted pleasantly creamy and the hints of basil gave it a nice kick, though.

Sainsbury's (three stars) appeared bright in colour and was full of flavour with a strong tomato taste. Though its texture was slightly thicker, it was not so creamy and there was less basil. Tesco's line (two stars) had a strong but sickly mascarpone flavour, which overpowered the taste of tomatoes. Morrisons' (five stars) was the tastiest of the bunch and boasted a perfect tomato kick - not too strong or too bland.

Asda's
sauce (three stars) was the cheapest at £1 and had a pleasant tomato flavour, but the texture was slightly too runny.
