Having first opened its doors in the 19th century, Powters butchers has undergone a distinctly 21st century revamp.

The 140-year-old Suffolk business, owner of the Powters Newmarket Sausages brand, has given its premises a new look designed to improve the shopping experience.

Among new elements is a hot counter for sausage rolls and increased space to accommodate a new range of meats and deli products. This includes the introduction of facilities for dry ageing and displaying beef at the ideal humidity and temperature.

“Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen a real growth in shoppers looking for high-quality, high-welfare British meat,” explains Powters director Tristan Powter. “By modernising the shop, we hope to show that butchers’ shops are evolving to adapt to the needs of today’s shopper.”

A range of meat and delicatessen produce is sold from the Newmarket shop, while Powters also supplies sausages to trade customers, including supermarkets, from a separate production site. It is one of three companies that make Newmarket sausage, which in 2012 was awarded Protected Geographical Indication status.

Powters’ revamp has included the creation of a packing area to help streamline the family-run business’ growing direct-to-consumer operation and wholesale trade to restaurants and corporate venues.

“We launched Powters Butchers Online last year, and it’s proved hugely successful,” says Powter. “The new packing area will allow us to deal with orders more efficiently and gives us space to further expand this side of the business.”
