Turnover at Superquinn’s online shopping portal Superquinn.ie is approaching 5% of the chain’s annual sales.
The anchor tenant in the Irish virtual shopping precinct www.Buy4Now.ie, Superquinn’s site was set up in autumn 2000 before Tesco’s online operation in the Irish Republic. It moved into the black less than 15 months after launch, claimed the company.
Costs have been kept to a minimum by using a store picking model, focusing exclusively on greater Dublin and sharing costs with other retailers on the Buy4Now portal, which designed the picking system and fulfils the orders with its own trucks.
Business manager Geraldine Penney said a new feature whereby deliveries included a free product had proved extremely successful. Suppliers sponsoring category sections had also seen sales uplifts.
