Scottish Quality Salmon has hit out at Brussels' moves to reduce the levels of canthaxanthin permitted in salmon farming.
The chemical is added to salmon feed to create the pink colour of the fish's flesh. An SQS spokesman said: "The Standing Committee on Nutrition's advice is that current consumption levels are absolutely safe.
"And salmon produced in Europe will be subject to EC guidelines, but salmon imported from Norway, Chile and the Faroes will not have to adhere to these regulations. This creates a highly unfair marketplace for Scottish fish farmers by adding costs which other non-EU producers do not have to bear."
