from Naved Syed, chairman, the UK Halal Corporation

SIR; The English Beef and Lamb Executive claims that it needs "unanimity of standards" for halal across the Muslim community before more work is done to improve the halal meat supply chain (& 'Mistrust of halal meat', The Grocer, April 29, p66).
Why? Other companies across Europe are operating to halal standards. Australia and New Zealand are also operating to halal standards.
Eblex insists it is taking halal seriously. So why then, at April's Food and Drink Expo show in Birmingham, did the Eblex stand have no mention of halal?
It seems to me that Eblex is happy to collect levies from the many slaughterhouses that are operating to halal standards. However, it's unwilling to give the sector the backing it needs to develop.
It strikes me we need a new levy body - Heblex, the Halal English Beef and Lamb Executive - to remove the mistrust in the halal industry.
