Yet another item of fresh produce has been added to the growing list of superfoods, with the news that mandarins may cut the risk of liver cancer.

Two Japanese studies have been published, which claim that eating mandarins or drinking mandarin juice can cut the risk of liver diseases developing.

But with mushrooms, blueberries and pomegranates among recent additions to the elite group, there is a risk that the benefit of superfood status could be eroded with every new promotion.

Fresh Produce Consor-tium chief executive Nigel Jenney said: "While there are natural attributes, and it is only right that they are highlighted, it is also important to get a simple, clear and consistent message across to consumers to encourage the consumption of fresh produce.

"It is important to be aware that individual

products have other unique characteristics that are also beneficial to health."
