The market for smoothies tripled in size last year as Brits sought out healthy on-the-go options and hangover cures.

Smoothies were the fastest growing area of the £966m juice market, growing 222% in value last year

to £64m, according to TNS Worldpanel.

Young people aged 15-19 and 25-34 were the most likely to reach for a smoothie, it said, perhaps as a result of their busy on-the-go lifestyles - or tendency to knock back too much alcohol on a night out.

The clear leader of the smoothies market is Innocent Drinks, which now sits in third place behind Tropicana and Ocean Spray in a ranking of the top juice brands by value in the off-trade market.

The category has also benefited from the introduction of larger one-litre cartons and the entry of new, smaller players.
