>>TESTING THE INDEPENDENT SECTOR on price and availability for The Grocer 33 basket

Proudfoot in Scalby Road not only scored full marks for choice, quality and service but proved it can go head-to-head with the multiples on price.

Proudfoot’s nominal basket price of £45.07 for The Grocer 33 was cheaper than the Co-op and one Safeway store this week and hard on the heels of another Safeway store and Somerfield.

The Grocer Top 50 retailer is supplied by Nisa-Today’s and had just one out of stock, Nescafé in 100g jars, but other sizes were available. Budweiser was sold only in 6-packs which were reduced by £2 to £4.49. Tetley teabags came with 50% extra free while all Heritage branded bacon was on promotion at half price. The store was clean and tidy with staff kitted out in a navy and light blue uniform. Shelf-filling was in progress but supervisors ensured customers were able to reach shelves and pass by with ease.

Proudfoot has bought adjoining premises in Scalby Road so it can increase its site by 30%. A larger car park and more selling space will strengthen the group’s position as the only supermarket in the affluent northern outskirts of Scarborough.
