We’ve seen plenty of meat-free meat - and even fish-free fish - now it’s the turn of the prawn-free prawn.

Vegetarian-friendly king prawns - the latest innovation from the Linda McCartney brand - are made from whey protein, potato starch and natural colourings and flavourings.

Rolling out next month, they were “very similar” in texture to real prawns, and were high in protein and a good source of fibe, claimed the company.

The first two lines to be launched would be plain Fish Free King Prawns (rsp: £2.50) and Fish Free King Prawn & Vegetable Stir Fry (rsp: £1.89), but the company said it was already looking at further ways to use the prawns and that other products were in the pipeline for launch later this year.

“We believe there is a huge market for Fish Free King Prawns and expect year-one sales to reach £1m,” said brand manager Roberta Herd.

Linda McCartney owner Hain Daniels Group - formed when Hain Celestial acquired Daniels last year for £144m - has unveiled ambitious plans to become a major force in the UK fresh and frozen foods market.

Last month, the company said it would broaden the Linda McCartney offering with lighter products and take on rival veggie brand Quorn in chilled.

Last year, Quorn launched a range of chilled and frozen fish substitutes including fish-less fingers and tuna style & sweetcorn crispbakes. Two of the crispbake lines were delisted by Tesco late last year.

  • Tried some of these fish-free prawn the toher night...they are disgusting. Nothing like real shrimp at all, and not even like real food. I love most veggie meat substitute products, but these things are foul.

  • Myself and my daughter tried these a couple of days ago and I do not think they are "foul" at all. Some vegetarians do not like any substitute for the real thing, but others do. They look very good and have a similar texture and flavor to the real thing. Keep up the good work!

  • I tried the faux prawns this week and have managed to eat a whole bag in three nights. As a vegi for over twenty years these are a brilliant and very close substitute for the real thing. I've had prawn cocktail, prawn curry and garlic prawns for the first time since 1980 something. Am off to buy another bag tonight, think I might try making a scampi type thing with homemade tartare sauce for this evenings din dins!

  • I have been a veggie for over 30 years and tried the Fish Free King Prawns recently - GREAT! While cooking I was lucky that there were any left in the dish due to my partner and myself nibbling them. I have used them in curries, Paella, stir fry and salads, great job and keep up the good work, not for me but for the wonderful creatures we share this planet with.

  • I got real excited when I saw them, the flavour was lovely but the texture made me gag.

I have been a veggie for over 20 years....The texture of these made me think of jungle trials and eye balls.

I am a massive fan of fake meat...these prawns...I food processed and made fake prawn toast out of them....texture issues solved! :o) xx

  • Tried these fish-less prawns the other day, and Im in the middle, the taste is lovely, but the texture is a bit weird, to me it was a bit rubbery. But please keep up the good work of introducing more food for us veggies
