Lactalis Seriously Stong Cheddar

Seriously Strong owner Lactalis McLelland has won a deal to supply both branded and own-label Cheddar to the Co-op.

The deal, which will see Lactalis take over the contract from Irish rival Ornua, means a range of branded SKUs including Seriously Strong Extra Mature, Mature, Mature Lighter and Vintage will be listed in Co-op stores from April 2017. Lactalis will begin supplying own-label cheese to the retailer later in the year.

“We are delighted to be awarded this tender with one of the UK’s leading convenience retailers. It’s a fantastic platform for our Seriously Strong brand, given the Co-op’s extensive network of convenience stores throughout the UK,” said Mike Chatters, sales director at Lactalis McLelland. Seriously Strong Cheddar is produced and packed at the Lactalis McLelland dairy in Stranraer, Scotland. The Co-op’s category trading manager, Calum Kirk, said the deal demonstrated the retailer’s ongoing support for British farming.

The Co-op did not comment on whether Ornua’s branded Pilgrims Choice Cheddar would be delisted.
