Waitrose has claimed a supermarket first by listing British sea kale.
The vegetable, described as a cross between celery and asparagus with a mild brassica flavour, will be on sale at Waitrose from next week (rsp: £2.49). It can be steamed, or fried to give it a crispy texture.
The forced stems of sea kale are available from January to March, but the “labour-intensive growing technique” meant it had not been commercially available until now, said Waitrose, which claimed to be the first British mult to introduce British sea kale.
“Sea kale is a classic British vegetable and producing it has been a real labour of love,” said Waitrose buyer Tom Moore.
