Who: Tesco

What: Tesco Mini Sliders & Hot Dogs

Where: frozen food

When: Launched September 2014

How much: £4/300g

Why: Tesco’s take on mini barbecue-style party food - mini beef burgers and pork cocktail sausages with mini bread buns - scored points for being made with 100% British pork and beef. But using the term ‘slider’ to describe a mini burger might have been a mistake as many UK shoppers will be unfamiliar with it. (The term reportedly came into use in the US Navy to describe the way burgers would slide on a grill as the ship moved.)

Consumer verdict: Although some testers were slightly apprehensive before trying, they found these ‘tasted better than they looked.’ With a high innovation score, most agreed this was a new and different approach to established barbecue party food. However, testers made comparisons with larger variants and some felt they were not as good as fresh burgers/hot dogs or were ‘far too small.’ The £4 price point was a bit steep for some who considered it ‘expensive for the size’ - resulting in a value for money score well below the category average. Nevertheless, two-thirds agreed it would be great for parties or as a kids’ snack.
