Asda has snapped up 15 petrol stations from independent forecourt operator Rontec, as the supermarket marches on with plans to open 100 standalone stations by the end of 2018 as part of its five year strategy.

The first Rontecs making the switch are Staines, Tottenham White Hart Lane, Tilehurst, Plymouth and Woodville. Asda is aiming to convert these units by mid-March, after shutting them for several weeks whilst it refurbishes them. The retailer says it aims to have all 15 sites revamped and open by summer this year.

The new Asda stations will stock a selection of everyday items, but will also act as a click & collect point- meaning shoppers can pick up any item from the Asda range.

“Customers tell us that a convenient and great value shopping experience is important to them. Asda is known for its low fuel prices and has been a price leader across the board for 50 years - we are now redefining value retailing, tackling the rapidly changing market head on,” said Asda chief executive Andy Clarke.

“We have set out a clear ambition to lead online and expand further into London and the South East, opening 100 petrol stations and 1,000 Click and Collect sites by 2018 as part of our five-year strategy.

“Our grocery home shopping is already growing at more than 20% year-on-year, and click and collect will allow us to bring Asda value to even more customers with the acquisition of these 15 new petrol stations.”

Rontec currently operates over 200 forecourts across England and Wales and Asda’s expansion will see the retailer gain four locations within the M25, four in the South/South East, four in the Midlands and two in the north and one in South Wales.

This news comes as the retailer announced its £600m expansion plans at its fourth quarter and full year financial results for 2014 last week, with like for like sales falling 1% for the year to 31 December.
