Sir Anwar Pervez, chairman of the Bestway Group, was last night presented with the Grocer Cup for Outstanding Business Achievement at the IGD Food Industry Awards.

Sir Anwar won the prestigious accolade in a poll of readers of The Grocer from a shortlist of outstanding business leaders.

The Bestway chairman started his career with one store in London and has built up a business empire that today includes banking, cement, rice milling, property and the Bestway Cash & Carry group.

Earlier this year Bestway changed the shape of the cash & carry market with its acquisition of rival Batleys for a reported £100m.

Readers of The Grocer were asked to vote for the individual that they thought had made the biggest impact on the industry, through achievement, leadership and innovation.

Julian Hunt, editor of The Grocer, said: “This award is very well deserved. Readers have clearly recognised the contribution that Sir Anwar has made to the independent, retail and cash & carry sector.”
