SPAR International has opened its first supermarket in India, which follows a recent move into China in November 2004.

As the first international food retailer to enter the Indian market, having signed a license agreement to operate in the Mumbai region with Radhakrishna Foodland Pvt, the company said it will be working to foster growth in India’s merging supermarket sector.

“The prospect of working with independent retailers in emerging markets, particularly such an important and focal one as India, was an opportunity not to be missed,” said Dr Gordon Campbell, managing director of SPAR International.

“SPAR brings best practice in international food retailing to the independent retail sector in India, offering our 70 years of experience in retail and logistics operations.”
