Waitrose has replaced traditional tray packaging for its steaks with ‘skin packs’ that save on materials and extend shelf life.

As well as saving 30 tonnes of packaging a year and increasing shelf life by three days, Waitrose claimed the new packs would make the meat more succulent and tender.

During the packing process air is removed from the product, supposedly improving shelf life and product quality.

“This fantastic packaging technology means we can offer our customers a better quality product while cutting down on waste,” said Waitrose meat buying manager Rachel Pearson. “Its lightweight but robust nature also saves space in the fridge or freezer.”

Waitrose began using the new packs on its Essential range of steaks two weeks ago and the customer response had been positive, the retailer said, with sales of the range up 17%.

Next month the supermarket will roll out the packaging to the rest of its beef and venison steaks.
