The average multiple stocks 50 different skus of ice cream tubs, with 15% of the category on promotion. At this time of year, 14% of normal lines and 27% of promotional products are low on stock.
Asda shoppers love a deal judging by a whopping 43% of promotional products needing replenishment.
This multiple offers the smallest range of the retailers audited with 33 skus present, though it had the highest percentage on promotion - at 23% of the category. Poor availability affected 14% of non-promotional skus.
Like Asda, Somerfield has a small ice cream range, with 34 products in a typical store. We recorded 18% of products on promotion and of these 24% were showing very low stock levels. This compares with 15% of non-promoted skus at risk.
Morrisons turned in an average set of results for this category. It had 50 products in the category of which only 9% was on promotion.
Our auditors discovered 14% of normal lines and 22% of promotional lines at risk in terms of availability, though Morrisons can take some pleasure in outperforming Safeway-branded stores.
Safeway fascia stores carry a large range, though shoppers will only find 12% of the category on promotion. Promotional products were heavily shopped, indicated by the 29% of skus that were showing poor availability. Gaps in the freezer affected 17% of normal lines too, higher than the retail average of 14%.
Sainsbury stocks the largest range, with an average of 64 skus found in the freezer department. With only 14% of the category on promotion, we were not surprised to find a high 27% of promotional lines heavily shopped and either out of stock or at risk of being out of stock. This compares to only 12% of normal ice cream lines found at risk.
If you are craving a particular ice cream brand, or just want a wide choice, Tesco is the best place to go. It has a good range of products in this category but additionally its availability levels were the best with only 13% of promotional lines and 11% of normal lines low on stock.
