Tesco has decided not to release comprehensive sales figures for its Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market business in the US until 2009 amid growing scepticism that it can mount a serious challenge to Wal-Mart, according to American food writer Jim Prevor, one of the most influential commentators on grocery in the US. He accused the business of failing to know what its customers want and not living up to its green credentials.

Scottish & Newcastle is set to be carved up by Carlsberg and Heineken putting jobs at its HQ under threat, said the Daily Mail. S&N employs 100 people at its head office in St Andrew's Square, Edinburgh, and 600 at Broadway Park, the HQ of its UK beer operations. Heineken will take the UK operations and expects to carve out £85m in cost savings.

Asda is exploring selling electricity to its customers through its power services company Power4All. In an interview with the FT, Asda CEO Andy Bond said that in "the medium to long term" the retailer hoped to extend to Asda's customers a programme set up last year to provide its stores with low-cost energy.

The Independent devoted two pages outlining the "truth" about children's food following research published by campaign group Consensus Action on Salt and Health that found some products contained the daily limit of salt for a six-year-old. The paper listed the salt content of more than 70 popular products. Kellogg's Rice Krispies and Peperami were among the worst offenders.

Milk and eggs could soon be listed as ingredients on wine bottles to warn consumers who may be allergic to certain ingredients following a labelling overhaul by the European Commission, according to The Sun. Egg and milk protein called casein are sometimes used in the fining process to clear yeast residue from newly made wine.
