The consumer
I would normally buy Pizza Express-branded chilled pizzas as they are of a decent quality, but after trying Loyd Grossman's Margherita my loyalty has switched despite the fact that they are about 15p more expensive. There was a decent amount of cheese on top and the tomato was very tasty. However, the base was the best point. Just the right texture. The packaging was uninspiring but maybe Loyd will brighten it up once the pizzas start flying off shelves. Four stars (out of five)

The retailer
The packaging is simple and unexciting, although the simple messages about the product and its ingredients are communicated clearly. There was a delicious aroma of herbs that drifted from the oven and it delivered well on taste and texture. However, the price is steep you can buy an own-label premium pizza of a higher weight for less. There is nothing very new or exciting about this pizza. Three stars

The Grocer
The chilled pizza category is a tough nut to crack for brands, dominated as it is by heavily discounted own label. Loyd Grossman's effort certainly delivers on taste. The crisp, stonebaked base, in particular, is a stark improvement on the flaccid stodge characteristic of so many of its peers. The high price point concerns me. At £3.99 it's going head-to-head with the popular Pizza Express brand. But some shrewd early price promotion could see this establish a loyal following. Four stars
