The director of food policy at the British Retail Consortium, Richard Ali, has been appointed chief executive of the English Beef and Lamb Executive.

He will take up his new post in January and will succeed David Croston, who retires in March.

Ali has always worked in food and farming and in his two years as BRC director of food policy he has been involved in all food chain issues, including communicating retailers’ views to the government.

He currently sits on the ownership body of Assured Food Standards, the British Pig Executive’s health and welfare council and Defra’s organic action plan group.
Before joining the BRC in 2002, Ali was regional director for the US Meat Export Federation for Europe, Russia and Middle East.

On his new appointment, Ali said: "There are many changes occurring in the beef and lamb sectors driven by issues like CAP reform and increasing regulation in the areas of environment, animal health and welfare.

"I am looking forward to working with the EBLEX Board and staff and the MLC

in helping the English industry to identify the business opportunities within these issues.”
