Asda is aiming to become the first UK supermarket to sell UK-grown seedless grapes in store.

Working with East Malling Research, the supermarket has planted green, white and black grape vines in Kent.

Asda hopes the vines – which have been imported from Spain, Italy and Greece – will start to produce fruit within two years and will be commercially viable by 2016.

Seedless grapes are the second most popular fruit in the UK, with annual sales of over £500m, according to Asda.

“If the trial proves a success not only will our grapes travel far fewer miles to get to our stores but we may soon be able to offer British-grown exotic fruits such as apricots, kiwifruit and melons,” Asda said.
