Asda is rolling out new “green” packaging to fruit and veg in a bid to extend shelf life and cut food waste.

The packaging features a gas-permeable film, which allows excess moisture to escape. Packs are tailor made to “create the perfect atmosphere” for each type of veg, added Peter Ibbotson, MD of Evap Environmental Packaging, which developed the innovation.

It is now being used on two of Asda’s Jersey Royals lines and will roll out to Brussels sprouts later this year. Asda technology manager Chris Jones said Asda had spent years researching the technology, adding: “We believe this will change the face of fresh produce retailing.”
