Marfrig Group and Walmart have embarked on a major project to establish a blueprint for responsible beef production in the Amazon.

With the help of NGO The Nature Conservancy, Marfrig - the parent company of UK poultry supplier Moy Park - is working with Walmart Brazil to ensure the conservation of the region’s forests, soil and rivers at the same time as expanding the supply of beef with assured origin to Brazilian consumers. It will explore better pasture management and forest restoration models, and advise producers on gaining their environmental licences.

“We expect to build a production model that reconciles the biome’s conservation and can be replicated in other areas of the Amazon,” said Ian Thompson, director of the programme at The Nature Conservancy.

It comes as Marfrig re-opened one of its production units, which has been idle since 2009, in the municipality of Tucumã.
