BAKERY BUYER, WAITROSE

Dickson joined Waitrose as a management trainee in 1987 after leaving the Royal Navy. Following training he was appointed fresh foods department manager at Waitrose's Dibden store, 18 months later was fresh food department manager at Marlow and, five years later, became dry goods department manager at the Abingdon branch. He joined the grocery buying team in 1997 as ingredients buyer. He held buying roles in the home baking, canned fish, herbs and spices, cooking ingredients, ethnic foods and oils and vinegars sectors. In August 2003, he joined bakery buying, taking over from retired Michael Hahn.
CAKE BUYER, THE CO-OPERATIVE GROUP

Balmforth was a graduate trainee at Safeway before becoming a buyer in health and beauty, then in baby food. She moved to Sainsbury as soft drinks buyer then instore bakery cake buyer. She joined the Co-op as senior category buyer for bread and morning goods and has recently become cake buyer.
CATEGORY BUYER FOR COLD AND HOT PIES AND PRE-PACKED SALADS, SOMERFIELD

O’Reilly joined Somerfield in 2001 as product group manager for non-food, buying for categories including home entertainment, batteries and camera film. It was his first job in the grocery industry. In November 2002, he moved to Somerfield’s convenience chilled department to take up his current post.
BUYING MANAGER, BREAD, ASDA

Peberdy joined Asda nine years ago as an apprentice in its grocery department. Her first buying role covered non-food and general merchandise, and she worked closely with Wal-Mart US buying teams in India and the Far East. She went on to become buying manager for bread.
SENIOR BUYER, PLANT BREAD, INSTORE BAKERY AND PATISSERIE, MORRISONS

Clegg joined Morrisons in 1994. He progressed from trainee buyer to buyer for canned vegetables and pasta, canned fruit, canned meat and canned fish in 1995. He became buyer for plant bread, instore bakery and patisserie and has since been promoted to senior buyer.
INSTORE BAKERY DEVELOPMENT MANAGER, THE CO-OPERATIVE GROUP

Gill has worked in the bakery industry for 27 years, starting as an apprentice at her family’s bakery. She was national bakery operations manager for Co-operative Retail Services from 1997 to 2000 then UK training manager at Cuisine de France. She began her current role within the Co-op in September 2002.
