Walmart’s top man in China has resigned.
Ed Chan had headed up the Chinese business of the world’s largest retailer since 2007. But he quit this week, with the company citing “personal reasons” for his departure.
News of the exit comes as Walmart wrestles with the ongoing fallout from a scandal over mislabelled pork in central China. A dozen stores were temporarily shut and Walmart was fined more than $400,000 for selling regular pork labelled as organic pork over a two-year period.
But the retailer insisted there was “no correlation” between the events and Chan’s exit.
“Ed decided to step down… for personal reasons,” a Walmart spokesman said, adding that the company had “put in place corrective actions in our stores” to prevent any repetition of the pork fiasco.
