A Californian wine previously available only in Tesco's Fresh & Easy stores is going on sale in the UK as the retailer ramps up efforts to harmonise its international wine sourcing.

WineWrights 2010 pinot noir, which has a 13.9% abv. is set to go on shelf exclusively in Tesco's UK stores in the next few weeks, priced £9.99.

The Tesco listing follows the creation of the Group Wine Sourcing arm by the retailer six months ago to examine how it could develop common wine sourcing across its global retail estate. Two months ago, Tesco product development manager James Griswood said it planned to make more products available in both Fresh & Easy and Tesco UK.

Four wines under the WineWrights brand, including a merlot, a cabernet sauvignon and a chardonnay, have been on sale in Fresh & Easy stores since March this year, when the retailer rolled out 27 new Californian wines. Among other brands that went on shelf at that time were Barrel Ranch, Wink, Open Field and Cloud Valley.

The WineWrights pinot noir, made from grapes grown on California's Monterrey coastline and selling for about $12 in the US, is described as "elegant and smooth with beautiful cherry aromas and a hint of violet".

Its UK launch is only the second time the retailer has brought a wine into the country from Fresh & Easy. The first was Australian surfer-themed brand The Big Kahuna, which went on sale in the UK in 2009 and is also sold in Tesco stores in Korea. It is available in red and white varieties (rsp: £5.79 but is currently available at 3-for-£12).
