ADM Global is to close its Hull site as falling demand and overcapacity take their toll on the cocoa supplier.

The closure of the Hull facility – which provides ground cocoa to Mars, Cadbury, Kraft and Nestlé – will result in the loss of 100 jobs, according to The Times.

ADM blamed its exit from Yorkshire on overcapacity and confectioners including Cadbury shifting production to Eastern Europe.

The company plans to close the site on 1 July, moving production to the company’s other processing facilities in locations including Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Brazil and the Ivory Coast.

Workers union Unite slammed the closure, which it said would increase the carbon footprint of ADM’s UK customers, who buy 90% of the site’s output.
