Like Tom Waits, Alphaville and Godzilla, it seems Kit Kats are big in Japan.

This is partly down to the fact that ‘Kit Kat’ sounds like ‘kitto katsu’ - which roughly translates as “surely to win”. The country already has a line-up of flavours that the rest of the world isn’t privy to, such as purple sweet potato. Yum!

And Nestlé last week chose Tokyo as the site of its first Kit Kat boutique, which opened in the basement of the capital’s Seibu department store.

The ‘Chocolatory’ features a Kit Kat wrapper chandelier (classy), history displays (stop laughing at the back) and the chance to buy Kit Kats in almost any flavour.

And not just from the usual range, either. Renowned pastry chef Yasumasa Takagi has been hired to craft some original variants, such as sakura green tea. Maybe Nestlé can give Greggs a nudge for some inspiration for a British launch?
