A couple of weeks ago, Bogof reported on the presence of a Champagne vending machine at Selfridges. Now Scotland’s poshos have an equivalent dispenser.

It’s not for booze, of course. Instead, Fisher & Donaldson, a family bakery based in picturesque St Andrews, has unveiled a ‘24 Hour Bakery’. The machine dispenses pies, sausage rolls and ‘stovies’ (tartan-coloured pasties made with shortbread and thistles) to hungry passers-by.

Naturally, the machine has been a hit with taxi drivers and students, but some of St Andrews snootier councillors reckon it’s not in keeping with the town’s image (it is where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met, after all). They have even called in the planning permission nerks.

Bogof wishes F&D well. Who’s to say that, in a generation’s time, the next royal romance won’t be inflamed over a late-night pie ‘n’ Irn-Bru?
