The next generation of farmers is being sought by NFU Cymru in a bid to get more people into the industry.

The farming union hopes that by providing useful support, advice and investment it will encourage new blood to join the industry and secure the future of farming in Wales.

The first stage of the campaign includes a new video (above) highlighting the different methods of getting into farming; a booklet with useful tips and advice from experts in accountancy management, law and other agriculture specialities; and a series of case studies, from across Wales, of people who have already started their careers in farming.

“We felt it was important to take this first step, particularly at this time of year after A level results when young people in the area will be considering what career path to take,” said NFU Cymru’s Sarah Jones.

Meetings have been taking place all around Wales over the past six months asking farmers how they entered the industry and what advice they would give new entrants.

John Davies, NFU Cymru deputy president, who appears in the video, added: “If it wasn’t for the NFU Graduate trainee scheme this piece of work would not have been possible. We have been able to have Gemma Schofield working solely on this project for six months and she’s done a cracking job on researching and pulling together all the information for this campaign.

“Come on, get involved – there has never been a better time to get into the industry, with consumers more interested than ever before about where their food comes from and how it is produced.”
