rats are used primarily because they are so sensitive to anything and can grow tumors with the best of care. Guinea Pigs, also, are very sensitive, more so than rats, but rats procreate at a faster pace, and GPs have a high natural infant mortality rate. The naked mole rat, in contrast, live 25 years or more and doesn't get sick and it takes a lot of effort to force a tumor on them.

I really hate animal testing. however, I see the necessity of it in today's society for some things like this. It isn't rocket science to know that a poison can harm you. What they wanted to know in these tests is the methodology of the harm, and they have found it.

By finding HOW the harm is done, it gives a direction to create countermeasures, and alternatives.
