Desperate Dan, famed connoisseur of the cartoon cow pie, would be incredulous. Britain’s love of the simple pleasures of meat, veg and gravy wrapped in pastry seems to be waning.

In the past year, value sales of chilled pies have fallen 4.9% on volumes down 11% [Kantar Worldpanel 52 w/e 18 August]. Further analysis from IRI suggests that it’s desperate times for frozen and canned pies too, with the former down 4% in value and 7.7% in volume and the latter down 9.4% on volumes down 14.8% [52 w/e 15 September].
