An environmentalist, organic farmer and entrepreneur, responsible for growing both The New Covent Garden Soup Co and Green & Black’s confectionery into successful companies

What has been the defining moment of your career?
I’ve been incredibly lucky to develop two pioneer brands that changed quite major parts of the retail fixtures. I guess getting New Covent Garden off the ground was the most exciting - it was the first time I’d done it and it was incredibly difficult in a sector completely dominated by own label.

What has been the key moment in grocery industry?
The growth of the supermarkets. It wasn’t just about creating convenience shopping, but also the way it shifted the power from supplier to retailer.

What’s been the most influential product launch over the past 150 years?
Cadbury Dairy Milk. OK, it’s not particularly healthy - but it’s a relatively benign, affordable treat from a company that really did care about its workers, and it’s still loved.

How important a tool has The Grocer been to your career?
It’s a huge institution - a constant in an ever-changing world. Because I’m involved with early stage products, being recognised by The Grocer is an important first step.
