Last weekend The Sun reported that Paul Gascoigne was addicted to Red Bull. The ex-England soccer ace had told staff at a hotel he was drinking 50 cans of the stuff a day - on top of pints of beer, cider and double brandies - before voluntarily going into rehab to kick the habit.

By pure coincidence, just three days earlier the Austrian company behind Red Bull had posted record sales in 2007. Gazza's habit, on a pro rata basis, equates to 18,250 cans a year. With him around, it's no wonder Red Bull's got wings.
