A Tesco Express in Bristol was left badly damaged over the bank holiday weekend as police clashed with protestors opposed to the new store.

Petrol bombs were confiscated by police and thousands of pounds of damage was caused, as 300 protestors gathered at the scene in the Stokes Croft area of the city.

Locals said the new store, which had been open less than a week, had been the subject of fierce opposition.

Several police officers were injured in running battles with demonstrators, who stormed the Tesco Express on Thursday evening.

“We will support any police inquiry,” said a spokesman for the supermarket giant.
