Pol Roger Ultra Brut Company: Pol Roger Champagne RSP:£32.99

Expert's verdict... 8/10

?Pure Brut is a non-vintage Champagne from Pol Roger. An equal blend of the three Champagne varietals - Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay - it is also 'sans dosage', which means no sweetening sugars have been added. It is pale lemon in colour with active carbonation. The palate is full of lemon flavours. The Champagne has a light feel in the mouth as a result of the subtle flavours, and, at 12% abv, is fairly light in alcohol. The packaging is attractive and has a premium feel to it. The high acidity and dryness of this Champagne may not appeal to all palates makes Pure an excellent accompaniment to many foods.

Consumer's verdict...6/10

?I'm not at all fussy about champagne marques as most of the brands - Moet, Veuve, Lanson - taste nice to me. However, I found this Champagne a bit thin and minerally. Even the packaging, which was austere and minimalist and reminded me of a stainless steel kitchen, echoed this. I understand this style of Champagne is very 'in' but I prefer something more full-bodied. We drank the bottle with some olives and the Champagne struggled to compete.
