When does mindless, yobbish pranksterism become thought-provoking existentialist art? Perhaps when it involves a bunch of youngsters from Kent bundling a sheep into a shopping trolley and abandoning it in a supermarket.

That's exactly what happened this week at Asda in Bexleyheath, when daring experimenters/idiotic thugs wheeled in a bemused ovine at three in the morning and ran off.

"We were shocked to discover that a poor sheep had been wheeled into our store," said Asda store manager Joe Lock obviously all too aware that there's very little more depressing for a sentient creature than being in Asda especially at 3am, with nothing for company but jabbering clubbers and dead-eyed shift-workers.

"We hope the culprits hand themselves in," Lock added, a touch forlornly.

The hilarious stunt/appalling outrage continues a run of bad luck for the innocent woolly beasts over the past month.

A flock owned by a Protestant farmer in County Tyrone was sprayed with the Irish flag a few weeks back, in what was presumably an act of extremist political activism. Either that or country of origin labelling has really got out of hand.
