Red-hot summer trends: Cockney rhyming slang, due to the Olympics coming to Stratford Rec, and 1950s instrumental skiffle-pop, just because.
So small wonder Mattessons has hit on the Hank Marvin/starvin’ rhyming slang connection for its new Fridge Raiders ad, debuting this week.
With Cliff Richard probably due some sort of jubilee himself, maybe Marvin is set for a comeback too. Mattessons certainly commits to the concept, kitting out dozens of kids in the Shadows legend’s bins and barnet.
It’s probably for the best Marvin changed his name before slang stardom hit. Otherwise we might be pondering the grubby significance of phrases like: “Don’t come in, Mum, I’m busy Brian Rankin.”
