As cheddar sales drop, British blue has benefited from a hunger for flavour, heritage and authenticity among younger shoppers
When it comes to British cheese, shoppers are backing blue. In a category that’s has dipped 0.5% in volume [Worldpanel by Numerator 52 w/e 18 May 2025], blue cheese is bucking the trend with a 6.1% volume gain.
That’s quite the reversal on the 4.1% decline reported this time last year. And it comes in contrast to cheddar, Britain’s biggest cheese variety. Its volumes have fallen into the red by 0.8%.
