Increasing labour costs, squeezed milk supplies and increasing demand are all pushing up the price of butter to melting point
Butter has become the choice of aspirational Brits. ‘Cottagecore’ content on social media is turning lashings of the yellow fat on artisan sourdough into a lifestyle choice. But it’s one that could out of reach for some shoppers – because butter prices are blasting through the roof.
The problem is global. In the US, butter prices have hit their highest in more than two years. New Zealand supermarket bosses say they are losing money on some SKUs. Even French bakers have warned of the impact of high butter costs on the price of croissants.
