The maker of Chevington Cheese, north east artisan cheesemaker Mark Robertson of The Northumberland Cheese Company, has applied to Defra for Protected Designation of Origin status.
Chevington is a semi-soft mould-ripened cheese made with Jersey milk to a 105-year-old recipe tracked down by Robertson at Northumberland Records Office. He said: “The north east seems to get a bit left behind when it comes to regional quality foods, and if we get PDO status it will encourage others to seek out other products from the area.
“The fact that it resurrects a 19th-century activity is enough for it to be recognised.”
