Analysis commissioned by Asda based on The Grocer 33 survey has revealed the chain is now 20% cheaper in real terms than it was a decade ago.

Asda, named Britain's cheapest supermarket for the 10th year running in The Grocer Gold Awards, compared the price of a basket of goods in 1997 to the price of the same basket this year.

The price of 27 like-for-like products would have cost £35.28 if official figures for retail price inflation from the past ten years had applied. However, last week these cost just £29.10 compared with £29.39 in 1997.
